A new community rehabilitation service, a partnership between Making Space and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), has opened to help adults with ongoing mental health needs transition from hospital care to independent living.

The service, which officially launches on 1 December 2026, features 11 self-contained apartments across two locations in Greater Manchester: Willow Lodge in Urmston, Trafford, and Wentworth House in Eccles, Salford. It is designed for adults who no longer require inpatient mental health care but need additional rehabilitation and support before moving into longer-term independent accommodation.
GMMH has invested £8.4 million in developing these apartments and establishing the new service. The development was shaped by a public consultation held in March 2026, which gathered feedback from service users, carers, local residents, and other stakeholders on modernising rehabilitation services. Key considerations included a focus on recovery in real homes and neighbourhoods, alongside staffing, clinical oversight, and safety.
Open days for the public to learn more will be held on Thursday 5 November 2026. Wentworth House, located at 8 Westminster Road, Monton, Eccles, Salford, M30 9HF, will host an event from 10am to 12 noon. Willow Lodge (formerly Park House), at 59 Bowers Avenue, Urmston, Trafford, M41 5TQ, will hold its open day from 1pm to 3pm.
Residents are expected to stay for approximately 12 months, working towards individual recovery goals. Support will be tailored to personal needs, including developing daily living skills, managing finances, accessing education or employment, building confidence, and community reintegration. Making Space will provide 24/7 support, collaborating with GMMH's specialist Home Engagement and Rehabilitation Team (HEART).
A key feature is the co-location of the HEART multidisciplinary NHS team (doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists) with Making Space's daily support staff at both locations. This integration aims to provide joined-up, personalised rehabilitation and foster skills for independent living. GMMH retains clinical leadership and quality standards, while Making Space manages daily rehabilitation and social care.
Michelle Bennett, Service Manager at GMMH, stated, "We're proud to be working with Making Space to support people as they take the next step in their recovery." She highlighted the investment in modern accommodation and the combination of specialist NHS care with personalised social care support.
Keri Smith, Chief of Business Development and Strategy at Making Space, added, “We’re delighted to be working with Greater Manchester Mental Health on this new service, bringing together our experience in person-centred social care with GMMH’s specialist clinical expertise.” She emphasised the importance of support in rebuilding confidence and skills for independence.
Willow Lodge, the former Park House building, will now house seven self-contained apartments after standing empty for several years. The building, previously a 14-bed hospital, will accommodate fewer residents, offering personalised support plans and risk assessments. Off-street parking is also available. Both organisations are committed to engaging with local residents and addressing any concerns.
Making Space is currently recruiting for various roles, including Senior Recovery Workers and Recovery Support Workers. Further details can be found at www.makingspace.co.uk/main/work-for-us.
