Editorial policy
Last updated: 5 October 2026
The North West Mercury is a digital newspaper covering local news. This policy explains what we publish, where our information comes from and the content we do not accept.
1. What we publish
- Local news: what town councils, public administrations and public bodies in the area announce and do.
- Companies, organisations and institutions: news, projects, openings, activities and events that they send us in press releases.
- Society, culture, business, sport and technology, always with a connection to the area.
2. Where our information comes from
Our news stories are written from the statements and notices published by public administrations and bodies, re-used in accordance with the rules on the re-use of public sector information. When information comes from a public body, we cite the source and link to the original. If a body objects to our re-using its information, we stop doing so.
We also publish information that companies, organisations and institutions send to the newsroom, such as press releases, statements and event notices. Whoever sends it to us is responsible for its accuracy and for holding the rights to the text and images they provide.
3. Content we do not accept
We do not publish:
- Illegal or fraudulent content, or content that promotes unlawful activities.
- Hate speech or discriminatory content.
- False or misleading information.
- Pornography or graphic violence.
- Spam, malicious links or dubious investment schemes.
4. Editing and removal
We may edit the texts we receive to fit our style, or decide not to publish them. We may remove any content that breaches this policy or the law.
5. Technology and artificial intelligence
We use technological tools, including artificial intelligence, to write, translate and illustrate content, in accordance with this policy and our Code of ethics.
6. Errors and contact
