Westmorland and Furness Council has postponed a crucial Cabinet meeting originally scheduled for 27 October, delaying a final decision on the future of two council-run care homes: Applethwaite Green in Windermere and Grisedale Croft in Alston.

The decision has been deferred to allow council officers and Cabinet members more time to thoroughly review a wide range of information. This includes evidence concerning the future financial sustainability of the care homes, the condition of the buildings, and their capacity to meet future needs. Additionally, over 500 comments and submissions received during a 14-week consultation period require careful consideration.
Cllr Patricia Bell, Cabinet member for Adults, Health and Care, stated that these decisions are vital for residents, their families, care staff, local communities, and the council. She emphasised the extensive and detailed information that needs to be considered, such as building surveys, financial modelling, alternative care options, and hundreds of pages of consultation feedback.
Cllr Bell added, "As a responsible council, Cabinet members want the time and space to read all the factual reports and supporting information. This extra time will allow members to conscientiously consider all the evidence in detail before the Cabinet meets, alongside the recommendations that were made recently by the Health and Adults Scrutiny Committee."
She also expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to gathering the evidence and to those who responded to the consultation during what is acknowledged as a "very unsettling time."
Summary consultation reports, all consultation responses, and other background information are available to view online via the Grisedale Croft and Applethwaite Green consultation websites. Paper copies can also be viewed at Kendal Town Hall and Alston Library.
