South Ribble Borough Council, alongside construction partner Eric Wright Construction and key stakeholders, marked the progress on a central element of the Leyland Town Deal regeneration initiative. This phase aims to create a new focal point for the town centre, integrating a refurbished Leyland Market, a new Market Square, two commercial buildings, and 16 new council-owned apartments.
The historic Leyland Market Hall is undergoing refurbishment, preserving its original internal structure. Enhancements include a new sustainable roof, 18 upgraded permanent market stalls, and additional outdoor and pop-up trading areas that will connect to the new Market Square. The two new buildings are designed to house a mix of retail, leisure, office, business, and community spaces, alongside the new apartments, intended to attract more people and businesses to the town centre.
Charles Hadcock, chair of the Leyland Town Deal Board, highlighted the importance of reaching this construction peak, stating it is another step towards creating a stronger place for living, working, and shopping. He emphasised the ambition to make Leyland's Town Deal project one of the strongest nationally, focusing on building quality and long-term economic benefits. He noted that the market transformation is on track for completion in autumn 2027, with the new buildings already generating interest.
James Eager, director at Eric Wright Construction, commented on the exceptional site progress and the collaborative effort involved. He also confirmed that the market refurbishment is advancing rapidly, with new stalls taking shape and fit-out works underway.
The ceremony was attended by South Ribble MP Paul Foster; council leader Cllr Matthew Tomlinson; deputy leader Cllr Aneila Bylinski-Gelder; Gayle Wooton, director of property and planning; James Eager, director at Eric Wright Construction; and project manager Nick Galvin.
The overall Leyland Town Deal is a £34 million regeneration programme transforming the heart of Leyland town centre. Delivered in three phases—Quin Street housing, Leyland Market Square and Commercial Hub, and Hough Lane improvements—the projects aim to create new homes, public spaces, commercial opportunities, and a more vibrant town centre. The entire regeneration programme is anticipated to be completed in autumn 2027.
