The challenge marks a significant milestone for Shaw, who was left unable to move his left side following a life-threatening stroke on Christmas Day 2022. After emergency brain surgery and four months of specialist care and rehabilitation, he has made remarkable progress.
Now enjoying a good quality of life with his wife, Bernadette, and family, Shaw is training with a walking group and a specialist personal trainer. Each step of the 3km walk will raise funds for the Stockport NHS Charity, aiming to bring hope to future patients.
“"The ward staff were so good to me that I wanted to give something back. I’m nervous, I’ll be tired and I don’t know how long it will take me, but I’m working hard, and I’m confident I can do it."
To date, Shaw has raised over £2,300, exceeding his initial £500 target, and is now aiming to reach £5,000. He is calling for support from those who wish to make a difference to the hospital’s Stroke Unit, whether by walking alongside him, cheering him on, or donating to his campaign.
Kate Leadbeater, Stockport NHS Charity Manager, stated: “Andy’s courage and determination are truly inspirational. Shawsy’s Stroke Strides celebrates his recovery and our exceptional staff who support stroke patients and families every day. We will proudly support him every step of the way.”
The event details are: Saturday 17th April 2027, 3 km, on the indoor track at Manchester Regional Arena, Etihad Campus. Funds raised will enhance the care environment on the Stroke Unit.
