Nazir Afzal OBE, described as one of the UK’s most respected public figures, will bring over 30 years of experience in championing justice, improving public services, and leading organisations. He previously served as Chief Crown Prosecutor for North West England and Director for the Crown Prosecution Service in London, overseeing significant criminal cases and over 100,000 prosecutions annually. His career has focused on child protection, violence against women and girls, safeguarding, and social justice.
Afzal's wider leadership roles include Chief Executive of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, National Adviser to the Welsh Government, and the first independent Chair of the Catholic Church’s Safeguarding Agency. He is currently Chancellor of the University of Manchester and Chair of The Lowry.
Speaking about his appointment, Afzal stated his intention to listen, challenge when necessary, and prioritise patients and communities. He emphasised the importance of spending time with teams and ensuring staff feel heard and valued. "Manchester is a city that believes in looking after one another. That spirit should run through our NHS too," he said, aiming for MFT to be an organisation that patients, staff, and communities can trust.
Ivan Benett, Lead Governor at MFT, welcomed Afzal, highlighting his outstanding record in public service, leadership, and independent challenge, along with his commitment to fairness, inclusion, and accountability. Mark Cubbon, Chief Executive of MFT, also expressed delight, noting Afzal's wealth of experience and leadership will be invaluable in improving care and transforming services across Manchester and Trafford.
As Chair, Afzal will lead the Trust Board, focusing on effective governance, strategic oversight, and accountability for one of England’s largest NHS Trusts, ensuring patients, staff, and communities remain central to decision-making. The Trust also extended thanks to Trevor Rees for his leadership as Acting Chair.
