Budding golfers from five Fylde schools made history this autumn by participating in the area’s first-ever Girls GolfSixes Mini League, discovering a sport they can enjoy for life.

Held on Tuesday 22 September, the fun, team-based competition was a shortened version of the Golf Foundation’s popular GolfSixes League. Using Golfway equipment designed to make the game easy to pick up, pupils built their skills, cheered on their teammates and enjoyed some friendly rivalry.
The event was delivered by the Golf Foundation, the School Games Organiser for Wyre and Fylde, and Fylde Council’s Sports Development team as part of the Road to The Open project.
St Peter’s Catholic Primary School took the top spot with 128 points, followed by Clifton Primary School on 110 and Heyhouses Endowed Church of England Primary School on 109, with just a single point between them. Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Primary School scored 107 and Ansdell Primary School 98, rounding off a brilliant day of close competition.
“

"It was wonderful to see so many girls giving golf a go, and the team spirit on the day said it all. Being part of the first league of its kind in our area is a real achievement for every pupil who took part. When we work together with our partners, we can open doors to sports that girls might never have tried, helping them grow in confidence and find something they love."

Councillor Jayne Nixon · Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture
The plan is to make the league an annual fixture, so even more girls can get into golf through their schools and local facilities. With the 2028 Open Championship coming to Royal Lytham & St Annes, it’s a fantastic way to build a lasting legacy for our borough and inspire the next generation of local golfers.
Fylde Council will continue working with partners to ensure every child in our community can enjoy welcoming, accessible sport.
