Four Liverpool-based NHS organisations, including Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian healthcare groups KIMS Hospitals and the British Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) to foster international collaboration.

The collaboration, formalised on 14 October 2026 during a Liverpool City Council delegation visit to Hyderabad, India, aims to create a long-term platform for clinical and academic partnership. It involves Alder Hey, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group), The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, and The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust working alongside KIMS Hospitals and BIMS.
KIMS Hospitals operates 29 hospitals across India, while BIMS is a UK-based institution focused on international partnerships in healthcare, education, and research. The initiative will concentrate on research, medical education, innovation, clinical exchanges, and workforce development. It also seeks to provide opportunities for Indian doctors to gain experience in the UK healthcare system and for UK doctors to undertake placements within the KIMS Hospitals network in India.
Professor Rafael Guerrero, Congenital Cardiac Surgeon and Director of Alder Hey Global Health, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting Alder Hey's commitment to sharing specialist children’s healthcare expertise globally. He stated, “This agreement provides an opportunity to explore shared interests with KIMS Hospitals, BIMS and our Liverpool partners, in areas such as education, research, innovation and the exchange of clinical knowledge.”
Dr Bhaskar Rao Bollineni, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospitals, described the partnership as a significant step in building international ties with Liverpool, noting the city's recognised expertise and KIMS's scale and advanced technology, particularly in robotic surgery and transplants. He added, “We see great potential through BIMS and our Liverpool partners for joint research, fellowships and the exchange of knowledge between our teams.”
Dr Sai Pillarisetti, Managing Director of BIMS, commented on the strengthening links between Liverpool's NHS organisations and KIMS Hospitals, emphasising the value of complementary strengths and shared ambitions. “Healthcare has no borders,” he said, “and stronger UK-India links here can strengthen the broader partnership being built between our two countries.” The agreement follows the recent signing of the UK–India Free Trade Agreement.
