The new facility, located adjacent to Stepping Hill Hospital’s main emergency department, features five new consultation rooms. This expansion allows clinical teams to treat patients with minor injuries attending the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department, as well as those referred from primary care, such as GP surgeries.
The centre was constructed by main contractor Warden Construction Ltd. The redesign of the ageing estate and the separation of urgent treatment and outpatient activities have increased assessment capacity, improved patient flow, and reduced pressure on the main emergency department. Staff productivity and wellbeing are also expected to be enhanced.
This development follows the full opening of the hospital’s main emergency and urgent campus in May 2025. Since then, the improvements have aided in directing patients to the most appropriate care pathways. Activity in same-day emergency care has risen, facilitating quicker access for patients and alleviating pressure on the A&E.
Waiting times have reportedly improved, alongside faster ambulance handover performance. Karen James OBE, Chief Executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, stated: “Demand for emergency and urgent care in Stockport and the High Peak continues to increase, but we are responding well to this growing need with the enhanced facilities on our hospital site. Our new urgent treatment centre is helping us to further improve our capacity and provide people with the urgent care they need.”
