Bolton Council has secured over £5 million in funding to begin significant upgrades to walking and cycling infrastructure in Bolton town centre, aiming to enhance safety and the overall experience for residents.

Work is scheduled to commence on October 12, focusing on creating high-quality, safe, and attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists. These enhancements are part of the ongoing regeneration efforts for the town centre, designed to make everyday journeys simpler and more enjoyable.
The initial phase of the scheme will concentrate on Bradshawgate and Great Moor Street. This will involve resurfacing roads and repaving footpaths to improve their appearance and benefit those travelling on foot. Changes will also be made to side roads to prioritise pedestrians, alongside an upgraded pedestrian crossing on Bradshawgate near Nelson Square.
Four key junctions are set to be upgraded to improve safety and ease of travel for both pedestrians and cyclists within the town centre. The introduction of segregated cycle paths aims to create safer routes for all ages, particularly benefiting younger or less confident riders who may prefer to avoid mixing with traffic.
During the construction period, traffic management measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of the public and workers, with efforts to minimise disruption. The funding for these improvements was initially granted in 2023 from the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund, following extensive consultation that shaped the final plans.
The project's commencement was delayed due to preparations for the demolition and regeneration of Crompton Place. With the removal of Crompton Place now underway, the travel improvement works can proceed.

"As we progress our ambitious plans to transform the town centre, it is vital that we include better ways for people to move around. Careful planning for vehicles, pedestrians and people on bikes, along with improved links to the bus and train stations, will make it easier and safer for people to get around. It will help make a town centre we can all enjoy and be proud of."
