A special ‘Together, we remember’ poppy design will be displayed on council buildings, libraries, care homes, and vehicles throughout Westmorland and Furness. This initiative serves as a mark of remembrance and support for the Armed Forces community.
From dusk on Friday 6 November until the morning of Thursday 12 November, the clocks at Barrow Town Hall and Kendal Town Hall, along with the front of Voreda House in Penrith, will be illuminated red. This tribute is in memory of those who have lost their lives in times of conflict.
The Mayor's balcony at Barrow Town Hall has been decorated with approximately 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies. These handmade decorations were created by former Mayoress of Barrow, Liz Chatfield, and a group of local crafting enthusiasts.
As part of the council's commemoration, the Union Flag will be flown from Barrow Town Hall, Kendal Town Hall, and Voreda House in Penrith on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
“"Remembrance is a time for us all to come together to honour the courage and sacrifices of our Armed Forces community. It is an opportunity to reflect on their bravery, remember those we have lost and show our support for those who serve and their families. Their dedication, service and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
Several commemorative events and services are scheduled to take place across Westmorland and Furness, offering communities opportunities to gather in remembrance and pay their respects. The council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, underscoring its commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans, and their families.
