Cumberland Council is encouraging residents to support the armed forces community and commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day with various initiatives across the region.
In the lead-up to this year’s Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, Cumberland Council is urging local residents to support the armed forces community. The council, a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, has outlined available support services on its website at www.cumberland.gov.uk/armed-forces-support.
Several council vehicles, including refuse and highways vehicles, are displaying printed poppies and a ‘Lest We Forget’ message. Window stickers bearing the same message are also visible at key council buildings.
Further commemorative activities include council buildings being lit red at night during the week of Monday 2 November to Wednesday 11 November. The Union flag will be flown from Cumbria House, the Civic Centre, the Old Town Hall in Carlisle, the Copeland Centre in Whitehaven, and Allerdale House in Workington on Remembrance Sunday (Sunday 8 November) and Armistice Day (Wednesday 11 November). Any council buildings open to the public on these days will observe the national two-minute silence at 11am.

"I am delighted that the council has taken so many steps to commemorate Remembrance in Cumberland. I will be proud to represent the council at events on the day, and hope many of you are also able to take the time to honour those who served at one of your local Remembrance events."
The Royal British Legion has organised a series of events within the Cumberland area, including a Festival of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle on Friday 6 November. Doors open at 6:30pm, with the event starting at 7pm. Tickets are free and available from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre.
