Cumberland Council has extended the deadline for submitting potential development or protection sites for the new Cumberland Local Plan to 30 November 2026.

The council is inviting residents, landowners, developers, and other interested parties to identify sites they would like to see either developed for a particular use or protected in the future. This 'Call for Sites' will help the council understand available land across the Cumberland Local Plan area and assess suitable locations as the new plan is developed.
Sites can be put forward for a wide range of potential uses, including residential, retail, commercial and industrial, leisure, open space, community use, greenspace, health, transport, utilities infrastructure, habitat creation, allotments, education, burial grounds, traveller and showman pitches, and minerals and waste.
Sites must be within the Cumberland Local Plan area, excluding St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and the Lake District National Park, which have separate Local Plans. Sites previously submitted to former councils (Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council, Copeland Borough Council, or Cumbria County Council) must be resubmitted. However, sites submitted during the first Cumberland Call for Sites in 2025 do not need to be resubmitted.
“

"The new Local Plan will help shape how Cumberland grows and develops in the years ahead, and having a clear understanding of the land that may be available is an important part of that process. Extending the deadline gives people more time to put forward sites for a wide range of potential uses, helping us build the evidence we need to consider future needs and opportunities across Cumberland."

Councillor Bob Kelly · Cumberland Council's Executive Member for Environment and Planning
