Cheshire Archives Seeks Women's Stories for '20,000 Women Zine Project'

Cheshire West and Chester Council

The Cheshire Archives is launching the ‘20,000 Women Zine Project’, encouraging women and girls across Cheshire to share their stories and create small, self-made publications to preserve their voices for the future.

The initiative aims to address the historical underrepresentation of women in the Cheshire Archives. Participants of all ages are invited to create and submit a zine, a small, self-made publication, focusing on a woman or girl they know. These submissions can incorporate writing, drawings, photographs, collage, or digital media.
The submitted zines will form a special archive collection, offering a unique snapshot of life in Cheshire in 2026. A selection of these works will be showcased in the new archive centres in Chester and Crewe in 2027.

"Resources are available online including a short introductory film, an accessible digital zine maker and educational materials for schools."

Councillor Louise Gittins · Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council
The project is inspired by a broader programme that explores the impact of women's stories on Cheshire's communities, workplaces, families, and culture. For more information on how to create and submit a zine, visit Cheshire Archives Women project or contact RecordOffice@cheshiresharedservices.gov.uk.
Cheshire Archives will open two new purpose-built Archive Centres in Chester and Crewe in early 2027. The construction of these centres has been supported by National Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Wolfson Foundation.
