New walking, wheeling, and cycling paths have been completed at California Road Public Open Space in Carlisle, funded by developer contributions and delivered by Cumberland Council.

The new routes connect Greymoor Way with California Road and California Lane, improving travel for residents accessing their homes, James Rennie School, local shops, and bus stops. This marks the first phase of enhancements for the public open space, with further improvements planned.
Cllr Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places at Cumberland Council, stated, “These new paths are a positive addition to the area, making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle between their homes, the school, local shops and bus stops.” She thanked Story Homes and Gleeson Homes for their contributions.
Cllr Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council, added, “It’s wonderful to see this first phase of improvements complete and the public open space becoming an even better place for local people to use and enjoy.”
Sophie Dowling, Deputy Headteacher at James Rennie School, highlighted the benefits for the school, noting, “The improved links will encourage active travel such as walking, wheeling and cycling, promote healthier lifestyles.” She also mentioned future additions like football goals, tree planting, and a wildlife area for outdoor learning.
Jo Morrison, Regional Managing Director at Gleeson Homes, and Jennie Taylor, Development Co-ordinator at Story Homes, both expressed delight in supporting the project, emphasising the creation of safer, more accessible routes and lasting community benefits.
