“"It’s fantastic to see work beginning on this new play area for Bransty. Shaped by feedback from local residents, it will create a welcoming and inclusive space where young children can play, explore and spend time with their families. Inspired by Whitehaven’s coastal setting, the design will give the play area a real sense of local character, and we hope it will be enjoyed by Bransty families for many years to come."

New coastal-themed play area in Bransty, Whitehaven.
A new play area inspired by Whitehaven's maritime heritage is set to be installed in Bransty, Whitehaven, by Cumberland Council, with work commencing mid-October.
Work is scheduled to commence on a new play area in Bransty, Whitehaven, as part of Cumberland Council’s initiative to enhance children's play facilities across the region. The installation at Harbour View is slated to begin in mid-October and is anticipated to take approximately six weeks to complete.
The play area, fully funded by Cumberland Council, will be situated with views overlooking Whitehaven harbour and the Irish Sea. Its design draws inspiration from Whitehaven’s maritime history and coastal location, aiming to imbue the space with a distinct local character.
Community input was sought in January 2026, with feedback from residents shaping the selection of equipment and the overall design. The new facility is specifically designed for children up to the age of six, incorporating a variety of dynamic and sensory equipment to foster inclusive, imaginative, and social play. A unique feature will be a bespoke Harbour View role play panel, modelled after a local fish and chip shop, further connecting the play area to its surroundings.
This development will be located adjacent to the existing community garden at Harbour View, which has been established and is maintained by Bransty Community Interest Company.
This project is part of Cumberland Council’s broader efforts to improve play areas and provide welcoming, inclusive environments for children and families throughout Cumberland.
