The playground at Burnley Road Recreation Ground in Altham is set to undergo a significant transformation thanks to a £50,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation.

Hyndburn Borough Council has secured the funding for the renovation project, which will see the replacement of the current play equipment, over 20 years old, with new, modern facilities. The redevelopment aims to create an inclusive play area suitable for children of all ages and abilities.
The new design will feature a dedicated toddler section, a large climbing unit, a wheelchair accessible roundabout, two swing sets (including an inclusive seat), a four-seater seesaw, springers, and play panels. These improvements were shaped by a public consultation held last Autumn, allowing local users to contribute to the future of the recreation ground.
Cllr Munsif Dad BEM JP, Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, expressed his commitment to providing high-quality parks, stating, “The playground at Burnley Road Recreation Ground is long overdue a renovation and by securing this funding the Council is showing that it is committed to providing top quality parks and play equipment for children throughout the borough. The focus of this renovation has been to make sure that children of all ages and abilities are able to enjoy the playground. This new equipment will ensure just that and I cannot wait to see it being enjoyed by all when it reopens this coming January.”
Penny Horne, FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager, added, “We are delighted to be supporting the renovation of Burnley Road Recreation Ground as we believe that all children deserve safe, inclusive and above all, fun playgrounds to enjoy all year round. We hope that families continue to bring their children to the playground for generations to come.”
This grant from FCC Communities Foundation complements existing funding, including £50,000 from the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund, £30,000 from Lancashire Environmental Fund, and £20,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All Fund.
Work on the playground is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This project follows the recent installation of a new play area at Gatty Park and ongoing works at Harwood Road Rec in Rishton and Windsor Road in Great Harwood, with further improvements planned for Peel Park in Accrington, Bradshaw Street in Church, Railway Terrace in Great Harwood, and Oak Hill Park and Highams Park in Accrington between now and February 2028.
