A college student's dedication to original storytelling has resulted in a top comedy award at the STEEL-TO-REEL College Film Competition, with her short film recognised for its creative merit.

Rebecca Smith, a student at Aquinas College, has won the Comedy Genre Prize at the STEEL-TO-REEL College Film Competition for her short film, Death is a Teenage Girl. The film was developed during last year’s Filmmaking Enrichment program, with Smith leading the project from initial screenwriting and storyboarding through to managing cast and locations.
Combining her creative vision with technical cinematography techniques learned in her Film Studies course, Smith crafted a humorous take on the traditional grim reaper figure, imagining Death as a sassy and sarcastic teenager. The film was first screened at the college’s end-of-year showcase.
Following encouragement from college staff, Smith entered the STEEL-TO-REEL competition, which is held in conjunction with the Bolton International Film Festival. After refining her edit and designing a promotional poster, her film was shortlisted for the awards screening on October 2nd, where it secured the top prize in its category.
As the new academic year commences, Smith's success is being highlighted as an example for aspiring creators. Her achievement is featured in this year’s Filmmaking Enrichment sessions, demonstrating the potential of passion and independent dedication.
