“"While the rising cost of living affects us all, those on State Pensions may struggle more than most to make ends meet, so it’s nice to know Pension Credit is there which can make all the difference to people’s lives. If you are on a State Pension, have savings and own your own home, don’t assume you won’t be entitled to the benefit as it can be worth thousands of pounds a year. It’s easy to check if you are eligible, whether online or via the free DWP help line, plus there are lots of local cost of living support groups which can support you through any claim."

Bolton Council is spearheading a campaign this week to ensure eligible pensioners claim Pension Credit, with government estimates revealing a significant portion of the elderly are missing out on vital financial support.
A nationwide "Week of Action" is underway from 12-16 October to challenge common misconceptions surrounding Pension Credit. Government figures indicate that between 760,000 and 910,000 eligible households do not claim this benefit, resulting in an estimated £2.5 billion going unclaimed each year. In some areas, up to 50% of eligible pensioners are not claiming.
Many older individuals may be unaware of Pension Credit or wrongly assume that owning a home, being employed, having savings, or receiving a private pension disqualifies them. However, these factors are often not a barrier. Home ownership is not considered in entitlement calculations, and the first £10,000 of savings is disregarded, with assessments based on a tiered system above this amount. Pension Credit provides additional financial support on top of the State Pension and must be applied for, as it is not issued automatically.
Bolton Council, alongside various cost-of-living support groups, is encouraging pensioners to check their eligibility. A successful claim could be worth up to £4,300 per year. Furthermore, receiving Pension Credit automatically unlocks access to a wide range of other benefits, potentially worth thousands more annually. These include the Winter Fuel Payment, Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit, free TV licences for those aged 75 and over, and support with NHS charges such as dental treatment and optical care.
Residents are urged to encourage family or friends of State Pension age to check their eligibility online via gov.uk/pension-credit. Claims can also be made online, or by contacting the DWP free help line on 0800 99 1234. Local cost-of-living support groups are also available to assist with the application process.
