The event, organised by Congleton Town Council and the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion, will see veterans, serving personnel, uniformed groups, community organisations, and the public pay their respects at the Cenotaph on Lawton Street. The parade will assemble at West Street Car Park from 10am and depart at 10.30am, with the service and wreath-laying ceremony commencing around 10.50am.
Mayor of Congleton, Councillor Suzy Firkin, highlighted the importance of the day for the community to honour sacrifices and reflect on the impact of conflict. This year's service will also mark the 85th anniversary of the Prinses Irene Brigade, a Dutch regiment that was stationed in Congleton during the Second World War.
A tribute will be paid to Treo, Congleton’s war dog memorial, with Treo’s handler and a veteran from the Prinses Irene Brigade honouring all animals who have served with the Armed Forces. Wreaths will be laid at Treo's statue.
Additionally, a free public exhibition featuring Ramesh Darji’s Dutch and English period paintings, including his poppy paintings, will be hosted by The Darji Expression at Congleton Town Hall on Sunday 8 November, from 9.30am to 2pm. This exhibition explores Congleton’s historic connections with the Netherlands.
An Armistice Day Service will also take place at the Cenotaph on Wednesday 11 November at 10.50am. Congleton Town Hall will be illuminated with poppies as part of the commemorations. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal began on Thursday 22 October.
Attendees are advised to allow extra time for journeys on Remembrance Sunday due to road closures. Back Street Car Park is the closest car park to the Cenotaph. The parade is scheduled to depart at 10.30am.
