Enabling works have commenced at the Cumberland Sports Village in Workington, preparing the site for the next construction phase of the major sports and community development.
Workington is set to see the next phase of the Cumberland Sports Village progress, with enabling works now underway at the Borough Park site. This crucial stage, being carried out by Story Contracting Ltd, is expected to last approximately three months.
The preparatory works involve establishing site security measures, installing temporary fencing, setting up a construction compound and laydown area, removing asbestos, diverting and disconnecting utilities, and clearing existing infrastructure and equipment.
Upon completion, the Cumberland Sports Village aims to provide a shared stadium for both Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC, establishing a modern sporting and community hub for Workington and the surrounding region.
A reserved matters planning application has also recently been submitted for the stadium, which is designed to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators.
The project is backed by the UK Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Combined Authority, and the Football Foundation. Cumberland Council will manage and deliver the revised scheme.
