Individuals passionate about their local community and eager to positively impact residents' lives are being encouraged to consider standing as a councillor. Westmorland and Furness Council is reaching out to residents from all backgrounds, ages, professions, and walks of life to learn more about the election process and representing their communities.
Linda Jones, the Council’s Director of Law and Governance, highlighted the crucial role councillors play. "Councillors play a vital role in shaping local services, influencing decisions and championing the needs of residents," she stated. "Whether serving on a town or parish council or as a councillor on Westmorland and Furness Council, elected members help improve the quality of life in the places they represent."
Jones emphasised that no prior experience or special qualifications are necessary. "Importantly, no previous experience or special qualifications are needed to become a councillor. The role offers opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, gain valuable experience and have a direct impact on local issues," she added.
To support prospective candidates, two free online drop-in sessions will be held via Microsoft Teams. The first is scheduled for Thursday 22 October from 7pm to 8:30pm, followed by another on Thursday 12 November between 7pm and 8:30pm. These sessions will provide comprehensive information on the councillor role, the election process, and post-election expectations, with opportunities for attendees to ask questions.
Serving as a councillor offers diverse opportunities. Town and parish councillors focus on local amenities, community projects, and neighbourhood priorities. In contrast, councillors on Westmorland and Furness Council address major services such as education, highways, planning, and adult social care across a broader geographical area.
Eligibility requires candidates to be at least 18 years old, meet the relevant requirements, and complete the nomination process. Individuals can choose to stand with a political party affiliation or as an independent candidate.
