Cumberland Council is seeking public opinion on proposed adjustments to Hackney Carriage (taxi) fares throughout the Cumberland area. The suggested changes aim to establish the maximum rates that licensed taxis can charge passengers.
The proposed updates cover several aspects of taxi pricing, including standard daytime rates, evening and overnight tariffs, and special charges for Bank Holidays, Christmas, and New Year. Adjustments to waiting time fees, additional charges for extra passengers and luggage, and other supplementary fees are also part of the consultation.
Councillor Bob Kelly, Cumberland Council's Executive Member for Regulatory Services, highlighted the importance of fair and balanced fares. "Taxis play an important role in helping people travel across Cumberland, whether that's getting to work, accessing essential services or enjoying a night out safely," he stated. "It is important that Hackney Carriage fares remain fair and balanced, taking into account the costs faced by drivers while ensuring services remain affordable for passengers."
The council is encouraging feedback from all stakeholders, including drivers, operators, residents, and local businesses. "We want to hear from everyone who may be affected by these proposed changes, including drivers, operators, residents and local businesses. I would encourage anyone with an interest in taxi services to review the proposals and share their views as part of this consultation," added Councillor Kelly.
There are two primary methods for submitting responses. Individuals can complete an online consultation form or submit a written representation to the Licensing Team Manager. Written responses must be received by 16:00hrs on 23 October 2026 and can be sent to Cumberland Council, Civic Centre, Rickergate, Carlisle, CA3 8QG, or via email. Objections to the proposed Table of Fares must be made in writing.
Comments submitted via social media or other informal channels will not be considered as formal consultation responses. A copy of the consultation notice is available for inspection at the Council’s offices during business hours.
If no objections are received, or if all objections are withdrawn, the new Table of Fares will come into effect on 30 November 2026, or upon the withdrawal of the last objection, whichever is later. Any unresolved objections will be reviewed by the Council, with the modified or unmodified Table of Fares commencing no later than 30 November 2026.
